Volunteer Requirements
Volunteers must be licensed amateur radio operators of any class, hold a valid driver's license, and have current auto liability insurance. Volunteers should also have the following equipment.
If you don't have your own (yet), we have a few radios (50w mobile and handheld), antennas, and batteries you can use for the day. If you need to borrow equipment, include a comment when you sign up. The event coordinator will contact you before the event to coordinate when and where to receive the equipment. The mobile radios are self-contained with power supplies and do not require any connection to your car.
* A dual-band (144/440 MHz) 25-watt (min) mobile transceiver.
* A 1/2-5/8 wave well-grounded dual band mobile antenna.
* A cell phone for calling 911 in case of emergencies.
* If you are serving as a rest stop station, a reliable, long-lasting power source like a fully
charged 12v battery with an 8-hour capacity. While handheld radios may be ok for
some events, mobile radios with at least 25 watts and a high gain antenna are better.
* If you are serving as a mobile station, your vehicle should be equipped to transport at least
one
person and one bicycle with a bike rack or inside the car.
Other helpful equipment includes:
* A GPS/Mapping device or app like Ride with GPS or BikeGPX.
* A dual-band (144/440) handheld transceiver (when you are away from your main radio).
* Extra set(s) of charged batteries.
* Earphones & speaker mic or boom mic/headphone set.
* Higher gain HT antenna than the typical manufacturer-supplied rubber duck.
